Slumped on a comfy chair,
I’m drinking on my own,
Listening to the sounds through my headphones.
And in my imagination,
The music that I’m playing,
Will astound you!
For it’s me on stage,
And I’m the greatest singer,
The very best that you’ll ever hear.
As the alcohol is flowing,
My fantasies are working,
To bring you near.
Yes, I know that in truth not a great deal happened between us.
Nostalgia deceives us,
It leads us to believe love was real enough.
But now that doesn’t matter,
The music and the drinking overwhelm me.
As the volume is rising,
My mind is far from the real world.
And there’s a song that’s been in my head.
So I play it again and again.
It’s saccharine sweet,
Rather quite silly,
But all good songs involve time and place.
And by the end of the evening,
I finally resolve to call her.
Later in the morning.
There is no point in waiting.
In fact I’ll do it now.
But I don’t,
And I wait,
Because I know that in the morning I’ll be sober.
And I’ll get up from my knees.
And all my hopes and dreams.
The stupid little lies.
The boozy alibis.
The headphones and the tunes.
The settee and this room.
Because I know I’ll be back soon
………To start it all again.
