Under canopies of roadside trees,
With sunlight filtered, yellow and green,
I gave my heart,
And my love,
To my Summer Rose.
Love was blue and hope so grey,
Until on hillsides, at last we laid.
I gave my trust,
And my life,
I thanked the Lord my God above,
For this beauty, and this love.
I stood so high,
And walked so tall,
With my Summer Rose.
But love was blurred in the Autumn mist,
And faith descended, like a dying leaf.
I sensed the fear,
And saw the doubt,
In my Summer Rose.
And when this Angel turned to stone,
Becoming silent, and far from me,
I saw our fate,
And lost all hope,
For my Summer Rose.
Now tired and empty like a Winter tree,
With its grizzled branches, bare and cold,
I’m looking forward,
By looking back,
To my Summer Rose.
